There will be two disciplines of gymnastics at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games: rhythmic gymnastics held between 17 - 19 July and artistic gymnastics between 22 - 26 July, both will take place in Essen, Germany.

Artistic gymnastics was added to the programme of the Summer Universiade in 1961 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Due to increasing prominence, the first individual rhythmic gymnastics world championship was held in 1963 in Budapest, just two decades before it made its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 1984.
