After a week of competition, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have caused an upset by defeating the defending champions, The University of Sydney (USYD) in the final of the Nationals T20 Cricket championship on the Sunshine Coast today.
This was the gold medal rematch between the two powerhouses and undefeated teams with USYD claiming victory when they last met in 2019 in Adelaide.
UTS were the first to bat in today’s gold medal game. They lost five wickets for 133 runs in their twenty overs, led by Hugo Farquharson, top scoring on 41 not out.
USYD fell short of the run chase, losing their last wicket in the final over for 115 runs.
The 2022 title is UTS’s third after last winning in 2018, and brings their medal tally to three golds, three silvers and a bronze since the competition started in 2007.
UniSport Australia (UniSport) Chief Executive Officer, Mark Sinderberry congratulated UTS on their victory post-match. “It is fantastic to see such a great contest between two exceptional teams, fitting for a national championship final. Congratulations to UTS for winning the title.”
“I would also like to extend my congratulations to all participating teams. Nationals T20 Cricket is another example of our commitment to providing competition opportunities that connect students in a meaningful way to their universities”, Sinderberry said.
Congratulations to The University of Tasmania (UTAS) who defeated The University of Queensland (UQ) in the bronze medal match. UTAS were sublime in their run chase, losing only two wickets to reach the 137 runs set for victory.
UniSport also recognised three notable individual achievements during the presentation ceremony. Congratulations to Finn Churchward (UQ) for scoring the most runs (297) and the most wickets were awarded to Vrushab Kumar (UTS) and Varun Khandelwel (DEAK) who collected 14 wickets each.
Eleven teams from across Australia participated in the championships. The event was held on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and was proudly supported by major sponsors, Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast and was hosted by the Maroochydore and Caloundra Cricket Clubs.
