Congratulations to The University of Western Australia for winning the Indigenous Western Series in Perth on Tuesday.
Teams from Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Notre Dame and The University of Western Australia competed in basketball, netball and volleyball competitions.
Hosted by The University of Western Australia, the event commenced with a special Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Dr Richard Walley. The Opening Ceremony was attended by all competing teams and guests, including the UWA Vice Chancellor, Professor Amit Chakma, and Director of Student Life and UniSport Australia Board Member and Chair, Mr Chris Massey, who addressed teams and staff to start the games.
It was a great atmosphere with Noongar Radio 100.9 FM broadcasting live from the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre Sports Hall throughout Volleyball and Basketball, and the EMAS Club (Electronic Music Appreciation Society) providing music for the last sport, Basketball.
The University of Western Australia managed a clean sweep winning all sports to claim the Championship. They also picked up the Spirit of the Games Award, by the narrowest of margins finishing on 9 votes, with Notre Dame right behind on 8. This award is voted by the officials across the three sports, and recognises sportsmanship, respect to opponents, competition, umpires, and cultural traditions.
Congratulations to all who took part on the day for your sportsmanship and spirit which created an amazing event and atmosphere.
