The University of Sydney reclaims track and field crown at UniSport Nationals Athletics

The University of Sydney (USYD) has soared back to the top of Australian university athletics, claiming both the men’s and women’s overall titles at the 2025 UniSport Nationals Athletics Championship, held in the Gold Coast from 22–24 April.

With dominant performances across three action-packed days, USYD cemented its reputation as the powerhouse of university athletics, taking home the G.R. Hulbert Women’s Overall Champions Trophy and the Tony Booth Men’s Overall Champions Trophy.

This year’s championships brought together more than 480 student-athletes from 38 member universities, who competed at the fantastic Gold Coast Performance Centre. With pride, passion, and podium dreams at the forefront, athletes pushed boundaries and etched their names into UniSport Athletics history. 



“To see this level of competition, sportsmanship, and university spirit on display is exactly what UniSport events are all about,” said UniSport CEO, Mark Sinderberry, “the achievements of these student-athletes inspire not only their peers but future of university sports stars in Australia too.”  


The 2025 edition will be remembered not just for the gripping competition, but for the remarkable individual and team efforts that are now a part of university athletics history. 


Standout performances from the event included Bronte Oates of the University of Technology Sydney, who defied rain and gusty winds to dominate the Women’s 5000m; Olympian Rebecca Henderson of The University of Melbourne, who delivered a masterclass in the Women’s 5000m Race Walk; Christopher Geordas, a UNSW Sydney student who clocked a new championship record in the Men’s 200m; and the 4x400m relay team from Western Sydney University all lit up Nationals with some electric performances. 


Across the three-day championship, a total of 15 UniSport Championship records were broken, highlighting the depth of talent across the track and field:

  • Women’s Triple Jump: Tiana Boras, Deakin University, 13.06m  

  • Mixed 4x400m Relay: W. Zakis, R. Demasi, S. Pye, T. Hunt, Western Sydney University, 3:32.24  

  • Men’s 100m T13: James Tirado, University of New South Wales, 11.62   

  • Women's 100m T35: Summer Giddings, Macquarie University, 16.76   

  • Women's 400m T36: Tamsin Colley, UNSW Sydney, 1:12.97

  • Women's Discus F20: Lillee Wakefield, University of South Australia, 25.05m  

  • Women's Discus F37: Ella Hose, RMIT University, 25.78m   

  • Women’s Discus T35: Isla Gillespie, The University of Melbourne, 16.37m  

  • Women's Long Jump F36: Tamsin Colley, UNSW Sydney, 3.63m

  • Women’s 5000m Race Walk: Rebecca Henderson, The University of Melbourne, 21:41.03  

  • Women’s 200m T35: Summer Giddings, Macquarie University, 38.29  

  • Women's 200m T36: Tamsin Colley, UNSW Sydney, 32.42

  • Women’s Shotput F37: Ella Hose, RMIT University, 9.67m  

  • Women’s Shotput F35: Isla Gillespie, The University of Melbourne, 6.21m  


The UniSport Nationals Athletics Championship is the final World Athletics recognised event on Australian soil for the season. The competition also welcomed seven invitational athletes striving for international qualification, creating an added buzz throughout the event.

The UniSport Nationals calendar now turns its attention to the Nationals Triathlon, held in conjunction with the Peoplecare Triathlon Wollongong from 26–27 April.
