2024 Overall National Champion University - The University of Sydney (USYD)

With the conclusion of the UniSport Nationals Distance Running Championships at the Sydney Marathon last week, UniSport Australia has named The University of Sydney (USYD) as the 2024 Overall National Champion University, following their consistently strong performances across the UniSport Championships and Nationals Canberra competitions held throughout the year.

USYD secured 18 pennants throughout the year, initially claiming both the women’s and men’s Athletics titles and the men’s and women’s 3x3 Basketball titles earlier in the year. During the 2024 Nationals in Canberra, held from September 7 to 13, USYD added an impressive 12 pennants to their tally, before completing their haul last week with the men’s and women’s Distance Running titles.

Finishing second overall this year was the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), with eight pennants, followed by the University of Melbourne in third place, and the University of New South Wales in fourth, each securing six pennants. (The number of second-place finishes was used to determine third and fourth place). Monash University rounded out the top five.

UniSport Chief Executive Officer, Mark Sinderberry, congratulated all universities that participated in the year’s national events. “I want to commend all 42 member universities for their remarkable efforts and sportsmanship throughout this year’s UniSport Nationals. The competition was fierce, and it is inspiring to see such passion and dedication from students across the country. I’d like to especially congratulate The University of Sydney for their outstanding performances across multiple disciplines, securing the title of Overall Champion University. This achievement reflects the hard work of their athletes and the strength of their sporting programs.”

Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness (SUSF) Head of Sport, Leonie Lum announced “‘We are thrilled to be the UniSport Overall University Champions again. We’re grateful for this tremendous achievement, but equally the positive student experience that we’ve been able to promote and deliver. Much credit is owed to UniSport, our competitors, our extraordinary students and staff, and especially The University of Sydney and our wonderful community of supporters who, with their hard work and benefaction, make these outcomes possible.”

Bond University again retained its name on the Doug Ellis Trophy (Overall Per Capita Champion University) which is awarded to the university with the highest point score following all sporting competitions, after it has been multiplied by the university’s population factor.
