Griffith University Men’s Rugby 7’s are the favourites to take out the UniSport Nationals Div 1 competition again this year, winning five out of their first five games played.

Captain of the side, Austin Capion, Bachelor of Business and Commence student, said his team is feeling confident heading into the finals playoffs later this afternoon.

“I don’t think we are feeling the pressure, we have a bigger team this year so we have an even better chance to back it up,

“The last couple of years we definitely had expectations while this year is a bit more relaxed,” Austin said

Although Austin and his GU team remain confident, he expressed his concerns going up against University of Queensland (UQ), University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Bond University (BOND).

“UQ, UTS and Bond will definitely be our biggest competitors,” Austin said.

With the 17-10 win against UQ today , Austin said he doesn’t have any doubt in his teams overall performance.

“I think we will warm up throughout the day and that will give us more of an idea how we are going with other competitors.”

Austin believes in his team’s ability to go all the way, hoping to take out the competition for the third year in a row.

“We have a strong team across the board, we have a couple of quick boys and obviously some bigger boys so I’m feeling confident at this point in the competition,” Austin said.

The men’s competition wraps up this afternoon, while the women’s rugby 7’s competition will kick off tomorrow at the Surfer’s Paradise Rugby Union Club.
